The Voyagers are a social group of folks young at heart and over 50. This group is a great way to get to know each other in a more personal way outside of church. Although we have many couples join us in our fun, we have many single people that come because they haven’t felt comfortable going out alone – such as dining, movies, plays, etc.
The Voyagers have one or two trips a month. We plan activities that are adventuresome, fun, and/or educational. You can usually bet there will be food involved! Most of our trips are local or within our state, but we have ventured out as far as Mississippi and Alaska.
The Voyagers would love for you to join us. Even better would be for you to bring a friend, a neighbor, or someone you might have just met at church. You can get information by clicking on the events of this web page, or you can read about us in the church newsletter. We have an area in the Narthex to make reservations, or you can call the church office to sign up.
March
On Wednesday, March 28th, we will have a tour of the Harn Homestead AND the Governor’s Mansion followed by lunch at Big Truck Tacos!!!!!
The History
The Harn Homestead is an Oklahoma treasure that celebrates the territorial history of Oklahoma offering a “hands-on” and “minds-on” experience. Visitors share in the abundance of a territorial farm, the brilliance of a one-room school house, the grace of a Victorian home, and the waste-not want-not ethic of a territorial farm family. There is no place else in Oklahoma that can offer this experience which captures the spirit of the brave men, women, and children who settled this state.
The History of the Harn Homestead spans over 100 years. After the Land Run of April 22, 1889 in the Oklahoma Territory, there were many disputes over land claims so President Benjamin Harrison appointed Mr. William Fremont Harn to be a special land commissioner in Oklahoma Territory to settle these disputes.
Mr. Harn and his wife, Alice, moved to Oklahoma Territory and bought 160 acres on which the William Fremont Harn Gardens, Inc., known as the Harn Homestead, exists today. Through his experience as a claims adjuster, Mr. Harn knew the value of land and became one of the early developers of Oklahoma City. Mr. Harn purchased land near downtown Oklahoma City and developed several neighborhoods. Most notable is Harndale, now known as Heritage Hills and features some of Oklahoma City’s oldest homes. Many are currently on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mr. Harn was a generous man. He donated 40 acres of his property for the State of Oklahoma to relocate the state capitol building from Guthrie to Oklahoma City. His neighbor, Mr. Culbertson, also donated 40 acres of land. The State Capitol now sits on both Mr. Harn and Mr. Culbertson’s land.
This is only about a 30 minute tour and the cost is $4.00.
Then we can go down the street and have a tour of the governor’s mansion. (Maybe having a woman governor will show a different look in the mansion??) This is a free tour.
So, have a late breakfast and we’ll go to Big Truck Taco’s around 1:15 –trying to arrive just after the crowd.
Meet at the church at 10:15!! Looking forward to seeing you!!
Yours in Christian love and fellowship,
Martha
